Importance of storing filament in moisture controlled storage :

Filaments are thermoplastic polymers which are hygroscopic materials, which means they have a tendency to absorb moisture. When filaments are stored in ambient environment, they will absorb any moisture in the air. Moisture absorption occurs over time and different materials will have different absorption rates. Nylon and PVA filaments will absorb moisture much faster (within hours) while ABS and PLA could take days or even weeks.


Makers often have multiple spools of filament made with various type of material and in different colors which lasts for long periods of time. Soon filament collections begin to grow and storage could become an issue as moisture absorbs in different types of material.

Water molecule’s boiling point is approximately 100 °C. Depending on the type of filament material, the extrusion temperature ranges from 160 °C to 250 °C. So any presence of moisture in the filaments will contribute to print failure when the moisture becomes steam and bubbles, causing interference with the flow of plastic out of the hot end while creating unwanted pockets within the finished object.

  • Brittleness and breakage of filament,
  • Diameter inconsistency
  • Hissing steam or bubbling when filament reaches the hot-end,
  • Filament degrading or lose tensile strength,
  • Higher extruding temperature

When moisture contaminated filament is passed through the hot end, the absorbed moisture turns into steam and will cause streaks, bubbles, and even brittleness.
