3D Printing Filament Storage Dry Cabinet

Eureka Dry Tech 3D Printing Filament Storage Dry Cabinet

Filament polymers are known to absorb moisture and will affect the quality of your print. Whether you use Nylon, PVA, PETT, PLA, PC or ABS or other exotic material filaments, keeping these filaments dry in a humidity controlled "dry filament storage" is one main element to a beautiful & successful print.

Eureka Dry Tech has nearly 30 years in providing humidity & moisture control solutions with dry cabinet, dry box, & desiccator products and we are proud to introduce our newest :

Eureka Dry Tech's Filament Storage Dry Cabinet features:

  • Low humidity environment suitable for storing various types of filament material.
  • Four filament feed ports supporting up to 3mm filaments allows direct printing of dry filament from the cabinet while in  humidity controlled storage.
  • Adjustable hanging rod will allow hanging of dry filament spools up to 33 cm in diameter.
  • Air tight cabinet will prevent moisture and dust from contaminating your printed project.
  • Low energy consumption (13 W Avg., 100 W Max).
  • Convenient design with no consumable parts nor desiccants to replace, no water tanks to empty.
  • Powerful molecular sieves desiccants keeps filament dry without heat to weaken filament tensile strength.

Benefits of Eureka Dry Tech's Filament Dry Cabinet:

Eureka Dry Tech’s 3D Printing Series Filament Dry Cabinet is the perfect dehumidifying/dry storage solution for 3D printing filament materials. Our automatic humidity control systems will provide a quick and simple way to store filament spools without hassle. Simply set the desired humidity level, store the spools of filament in the dry storage cabinet and the dehumidifier "core unit" will take care of the rest. Filaments will stay completely dry & dust free, easily accessible, perfectly identifiable and ready to be used anytime you need them for a print.

Test print results of Taulman Nylon 645 filament below has shown significant improvement :

Eureka Dry Tech’s Auto Dry Box will provide moisture control solution for storage of filament polymer spools up to 33cm in diameter. Eureka Dry Tech's automatic humidity control cabinets will offer a quick and simple way to store spools of filament in a dry and dust free environement without hassles of replacing desiccants or high electricity bills. Simply set the desired humidity level, store the filaments and our dehumidifier will take care of the rest. Your filament will be easily accessible, and ready to print anytime.

Importance of storing filament in moisture controlled storage :

Filaments are thermoplastic polymers which are hygroscopic materials, which means they have a tendency to absorb moisture. When filaments are stored in ambient environment, they will absorb any moisture in the air. Moisture absorption occurs over time and different materials will have different absorption rates. Nylon and PVA filaments will absorb moisture much faster (within hours) while ABS and PLA could take days or even weeks.

Makers often have multiple spools of filament made with various type of material and in different colors which lasts for long periods of time. Soon filament collections begin to grow and storage could become an issue as moisture absorbs in different types of material.

Water molecule’s boiling point is approximately 100 °C. Depending on the type of filament material, the extrusion temperature ranges from 160 °C to 250 °C. So any presence of moisture in the filaments will contribute to print failure when the moisture becomes steam and bubbles, causing interference with the flow of plastic out of the hot end while creating unwanted pockets within the finished object.

Effects of Moisture Absorption by 3D Printing filament material may result in the following problems:

  • Brittleness and breakage of filament,
  • Diameter inconsistency
  • Hissing steam or bubbling when filament reaches the hot-end,
  • Filament degrading or lose tensile strength,
  • Higher extruding temperature

When moisture contaminated filament is passed through the hot end, the absorbed moisture turns into steam and will cause streaks, bubbles, and even brittleness.
